Suffering, Evil, & Lament

CALL TO WORSHIP

Keep us safe, O God, for in you we take refuge. Lord, you alone are our portion and cup; you make our lots secure.

We keep our eyes always on the Lord. With him at our right hand, we will not be shaken.

Therefore our hearts are glad and our tongues rejoice; our bodies also will rest secure, because you will not abandon us.

We have trusted in your steadfast love; our hearts will rejoice in your salvation. We will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with us.
(Based on Psalm 13 and 16)

Song: 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)

Song: Indescribable

CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE

When we look around at the world in which we live, the presence of evil and suffering is sometimes too much for us to bear. When sin entered the world, all of creation was broken, sin shattered the good and perfect creation God had made and we still live in that reality now. God wants us to bring our suffering to Him though, we can make a case before Him, laying our emotion and frustration before Him. Take a moment to do that now, to confess where you see the damaging effects of sin in your own life, lamenting at the suffering and evil we see all around us.

In the Bible God tells us that creation is still groaning and the effects of sin are still a reality for us. But God is still good, Christ has taken our sin upon him and dealt with it so that we have a future hope where there will be no more pain or suffering. The hope of the gospel is that not only has our sin been dealt with but God meets us in our struggles now.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

PREACHING OF THE WORD

This week Gary Aston preached the first in our new series on Lament. He took us through Psalm 13 as an example of a Psalm of Lament and helped us look at Suffering, Evil, & Lament. Click here to listen to that sermon.

COMMUNION

Every week we want to respond to what God has done for us in Jesus. One of the great ways he has provided for us to remember the truth of the gospel is giving us communion. As we take the bread and the wine we remember what Jesus has done for us.

POST COMMUNION READING

Jesus’ death brings us life and this meal reminds us that we are fed by Jesus and forgiven because of Jesus.

We rejoice that You have died, rose again, and are now with the Father advocating for us. Amen.

With our money, time, and talent we give generously, knowing that through Your Son, Jesus, You have generously given to us.

We rejoice that You have given everything and we joyfully give everything back to Your care. Amen.

Song: When I Survey

Song: The Power of the Cross

COMMITMENT READING

Father we thank you that you care for us in the midst of our pain and suffering. Thank you that Jesus came down into our broken world, suffering for our sake, that we might be healed. The Spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead now lives in us, we are free from the power of sin and we will be raised to new life in Christ.

Help us in the midst of our troubles to know that because Jesus suffered, he is able to empathize with our sufferings and help us to comfort one another with the comfort that only comes through Christ. Amen.

Song: Cornerstone

BENEDICTION

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word. Peace be with you.

And also with you.
Amen.

Prepare (July 3, 2016)

This blog gives you a glimpse into the upcoming Sunday Gathering. It's an opportunity to read through the passage we'll be studying together, pray through some of the liturgy we'll be using, and listen to a selection of the songs we’ll be singing.

Suffering, Evil, & Lament

SERMON

This Sunday we will be starting our sermon series on Lament. The presence of evil and suffering in the world is an unavoidable reality, but this series will equip you to deal with them. We'll be exploring some of the Psalms of Lament together and Gary Aston will be kicking us off this week in Psalm 13.

LITURGY

CONFESSION & ASSURANCE

MUSIC

  • O God (Dustin Kensrue): A song of assurance that God is present with us in our struggles, when we feel alone and far from Him he is with us. A wonderful reminder that nothing can separate us from the love of God.

  • 10,000 Reasons: A song of praise affirming glorious truths about the God we gather to worship.

A Traveller's Tale (Romans 8:1-4)

CALL TO WORSHIP

In a week full of change & uncertainty it's good to call our hearts to worship with the truth of who God is. Praise the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.

Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.

Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals.

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.

(Psalm 150)

Song: Come Praise & Glorify

Song: Behold Our God

CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE

We've just sung of God's glory and majesty, yet we can be so quick to pour our praise out to other things. In Romans 7 Paul tells us that there is war waging in our souls, we want to do good and to delight in God but there is evil in our hearts, sin is at work within us. Take a moment to reflect on that reality, to confess your sin before God now.

The good news of the gospel is that Christ has won the battle for us, in Him we have the victory over sin!

PASSING OF THE PEACE

PRAYER FOR OUR NATION

We spent some time as a church praying for our nation in the aftermath of the EU referendum. Please continue to pray for our country, our leaders and for unity in these uncertain times.

PREACHING OF THE WORD

This week KJ Pugh joined us from Grace Church Boroughbridge and preached to us on Romans 8:1-4. He preached through a visual representation of these 4 verses, please find the images below to reflect on and help you as you listen to the sermon.

Song: In Christ Alone

COMMITMENT READING

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:1-2)

The Spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead now lives in us, we are free from the power of sin and we will be raised to new life in Christ.

Song: Christ Is Risen

BENEDICTION

To Jesus Christ, who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Peace be with you.

And also with you.
